L'ospite di oggi è un po' speciale perchè si tratta di un'autrice internazionale che abbiamo conosciuto grazie alla Always Publishing, che ha portato in Italia due (fin'ora) dei suoi romanzi: Per il mio amore, Whiskey e La strada dei nostri cuori. Siamo liete di aver chiacchierato con Kandi Steiner e finalmente possiamo svelarvi cosa ci ha raccontato!

Ora, parlando de La strada dei nostri cuori (On the way to you) edito in Italia dalla Always Publishing…
Ti siamo veramente grate per il tempo che stai dedicando a noi e ai nostri lettori.
Sappiamo tutto del luogo in cui vivi e sappiamo che ti piace parlare al tuo gattino, ma ci piacerebbe conoscerti meglio…
Sappiamo che hai iniziato a scrivere dopo aver letto Harry Potter e che da quel momento non hai più smesso… raccontaci una bizzarra abitudine da scrittrice.
In realtà ho cominciato a scrivere un po’ PRIMA di leggere Harry Potter, ma si trattava perlopiù di poesie d’amore scritte per ragazzi in terza media. ;) Ma sì, dopo aver letto il primo libro ho guardato mia mamma e le ho detto, “Un giorno sarò come JK Rowling”. Per quanto riguarda una strana abitudine da scrittrice, ne ho due che potrebbero rientrare in questa categoria. La prima è che faccio bagni quando ho il blocco dello scrittore. Non so perché, ma i bagni mi aiutano a liberare la mente e a focalizzarmi sulla scena, così da riportarmi in carreggiata. La seconda è che ascolto musica classica o le colonne sonore dei film il 99% del tempo in cui scrivo. Adoro il suono del piano e gli archi e il jazz e le colonne sonore drammatiche. Mi aiutano a scrivere le scene!
Come scegli il titolo e la cover dei tuoi romanzi?
Dipende moltissimo dalla storia. Per esempio, per La strada dei nostri cuori il titolo è tratto da una frase alla fine del libro. “Abbiamo trascorso solo poche settimane insieme, ma mi è sembrata una vita intera. È come se ogni attimo vissuto prima che tu entrassi nel parcheggio di quella tavola calda sia stato un allenamento. Mi sono allenata a respirare, a ridere, ad esistere sulla strada che mi portava a te (On the way to you, titolo originale); così, quando mi avresti trovata, avrei saputo come si faceva a vivere”.
Revelry si ispira alla mia canzone preferita dei Kings of Leon. I titoli della Becker Brothers series sono famosi modi di bere il whiskey, dato che i libri sono ambientati in delle distillerie, e i titoli dei libri stessi si legano alla storia per esempio, On the Rocks, è sia un modo di bere whiskey, sia un modo della loro relazione. Neat (liscio), è sia un modo di bere whiskey, sia una caratteristica del protagonista. Mi lascio guidare dal mio istinto quando si tratta dei titoli e mi piace che siano legati al romanzo in qualche modo.
Quanto tempo impieghi di solito a scrivere un libro? Ti è mai capitato di avere il blocco dello scrittore? Se sì, come l’hai gestito?
Dipende. Il libro che mi ha impiegato più tempo, Weightless, l’ho scritto in poco più di un anno. Quello che mi ha impiegato meno tempo, Per il mio amore, Whiskey, l’ho scritto in nove settimane. Per il blocco dello scrittore, ho già risposto qualche domanda fa.
C’è un libro che hai sempre voluto scrivere? (Per esempio, noi avremmo voluto essere le autrici de Il trono di spade!)
C’è un libro motivazionale che ho sempre voluto scrivere e ho finalmente iniziato quest’anno. Spero di completarlo entro il 2020 per mostrarlo al mondo!
Hai un autore preferito? Forse qualcuno che ti ha ispirato negli anni?
Impossibile scegliere un solo autore per me, ma posso dire di essere ispirata dai miei amici scrittori. Staci Hart e Brittany C. Cherry e Karla Sorensen e BB Faston e tanti altri. Traggo ispirazione da loro ogni giorno, e amo estremamente i loro romanzi.
Hai qualcosa in comune con Cooper ed Emery?
Assolutamente. Cooper e io abbiamo avuto un’educazione simile. La mia vita non è stata dura quanto la sua, ma sono cresciuta in una povera e piccola città in mezzo al nulla e ho dovuto lottare per ottenere qualsiasi cosa. Come lei, anch’io cerco la positività e la bellezza in ogni situazione, non importa quanto dura sia. Allo stesso modo, come Emery ho dovuto lottare contro attacchi d’ansia e depressione e penso che fosse la cosa più importante che volevo mostrare – che quella depressione non è una cosa “uguale per tutti”, e che si può sopravvivere a essa.
La storia parla di un argomento davvero delicato: la depressione. È stato difficile scrivere di qualcosa di così profondo?
È stato struggente e catartico al tempo stesso. Era qualcosa di cui volevo scrivere da lungo tempo, ma avevo bisogno di farlo solo quando mi fossi sentita pronta ad affrontare la sfida. Finora, questo è il mio libro preferito tra quelli che ho scritto, ed è soprattutto per via dei messaggi che ricevo dai lettori che si identificano con Emery e che mi ringraziano per il modo in cui ho parlato della depressione nelle relazioni. Penso che tutti desideriamo l’amore e che nessuno di noi sia perfetto (infatti, molti di noi sono davvero incasinati). Volevo esplorare una relazione che non fosse tutta rose e fiori, ma che avesse anche delle difficoltà.
Un bel ricordo di quando hai scritto questa storia?
Non dimenticherò mai la scena del primo bacio. Ho amato la coppia di anziani che Cooper ed Emery hanno incontrato nel loro viaggio, e soprattutto ho adorato scrivere la scena del falò. Poi quando Emery porta Cooper a fare una passeggiata e lei è fatta per prima volta e non smette di ridacchiare, e stanno camminando sotto il cielo stellato… sigh. Posso sentire e immaginare ogni cosa di quel momento. E penso che sia il mio primo bacio preferito di tutti i libri che ho scritto.
Ultimo ma non meno importante… puoi anticiparci qualcosa sui tuoi progetti futuri? Cosa dobbiamo aspettarci?
Adesso sto lavorando al terzo libro della Becker Brothers Series – Manhattan. Uscirà il prossimo mese! Poi scriverò il quarto e ultimo romanzo.
Nel 2020 arriverà anche un altro romanzo della PSU series e anche degli sport romance (se tutto va secondo i piani).
In Italia, la Always Publishing mi ha detto che la mia famosa angosciante duologia uscirà a gennaio! Non vedo l’ora di farvi conoscere la storia di Charlie, Reese e Cameron. Spero siate pronti per il triangolo amoroso della vostra vita. ;)

We heard you started writing after reading Harry Potter and that you never stopped… tell us
about an odd habit as a writer.
I actually started writing a little bit BEFORE I read Harry Potter, but it was mostly love poems to boys in the third grade. ;) But yes, after I read that first book, I looked at my mom and said, “I’m going to be JK Rowling one day.” As for an odd writer habit I have, I have two that might fall under the “strange” category. One, I take baths when I have writer’s block. I don’t know why, but baths always help me clear my head and focus on my scene, and get back into the mode to write. And two, I listen to classical music or film scores 99% of the time while writing. I love the sound of piano and strings and jazz and dramatic film scores. They drive my scenes!
How do you choose title and cover for your books?
This heavily depends on the story. For instance, On the Way to You – that title came from a famous line near the end of the book. “We’ve only spent weeks together, but it feels like a lifetime to me. It feels like every moment before you pulled into that diner parking lot was practice. I practiced breathing, practiced laughing, practiced existing in every moment on the way to you so that when you found me, I’d know how to live.”
Revelry was inspired by my favorite Kings of Leon song, and weaved into the story. The Becker Brothers series titles are four famous ways to have whiskey, since the books are set around a whiskey distillery, and the titles ALSO tie into the books (for instance, On the Rocks, both a way to drink whiskey and a symbol of their relationship being on the rocks. Neat, both a way to drink whiskey and a description of the main character). I usually go with my gut when it comes to titles, and I love when they’re tied into the manuscript in some way.
How long does it take to write a book? Have ever experienced the writer’s block? If so, how did
you handle it?
See above for how I handle writer’s block. But as for how long it takes, it really depends. The book that took me the longest to write (Weightless) was a little over a year. The fastest book I’ve ever written (A Love Letter to Whiskey) was beginning to end in just 9 short weeks.
Is there a book you’d always wanted to write? (For instances, we would’ve want to write Games of Thrones!)
There’s a motivational book I’ve always wanted to write, and I finally started it this year. I hope to complete it in 2020 so I can get it out into the world!
Do you have a favorite author? Maybe one who has inspired you over the years?
It’s impossible for me to pick a favorite author, but I will say that I am truly inspired by my close writer friends. Staci Hart and Brittainy C. Cherry and Karla Sorensen and BB Easton and a whole slew of others. I find inspiration from them every single day, and love their books tremendously.
Now, speaking about our last reading, On the way to you (La strada dei nostri cuori in Italy, published by Always Publishing)…
Can you relate with Cooper and Emery? Do you think you have something in common with your characters?
Absolutely. Cooper and I had a similar upbringing. My life wasn’t quite as rough, but I grew up poor in a small town in the middle of nowhere and I had to struggle for everything I ever got. I identify with her ability to find the positivity and beauty in any situation – no matter how dark. Similarly, I can relate to Emery’s battle with anxiety and depression, and I think that was the most important thing I wanted to cover – that depression is not a “one size fits all” kind of thing, and that it can be survived.
The story speaks about a very delicate argument: depression. Was it difficult to write about something so deep?
It was both heartbreaking and cathartic. This was something I had wanted to write about for a very long time, but I needed to wait until my writing ability was able to handle the challenge. To this day, this is my favorite book I have ever written, and it is mainly because of the messages I receive daily from readers who identify with Emery and are thankful for what I have exposed concerning depression in relationships. I think we all desire love, and none of us are perfect (in fact, most of us are pretty messed up). I wanted to explore a relationship that isn’t all butterflies and roses, but has some rough edges, too.
One good memory about writing this story.
I’ll never forget writing the first kiss scene. I loved the older couple Emery and Cooper met on their trip, and I especially loved writing the campfire scene. Then, when Emery takes Cooper on a walk and she’s high for the first time, and she’s all giggly, and they’re walking under the stars… sigh. I could just feel and picture everything in that moment. And I think that’s my favorite first kiss out of all of my books.
Last but not least… can you tell us a bit about your future projects? What we should expect from your future works?
Right now, I’m working on the third book in the Becker Brothers Series – Manhattan. It will release next month! Then, I’ll write the fourth and final book.
In 2020, you can also expect another installment of the PSU series from me, as well as a sports romance (if all goes according to plan).
In Italy, Always Publishing has said that my famous angsty duet will be out in January! I can’t wait for Italy to experience Charlie, Reese, and Cameron’s story. I hope y’all are ready for the love triangle of your life. ;)
